Cynthia was relieved when 1LT Jennifer, her deputy, was transferred back to Corrections Service headquarters in the capital. Kate had decided that Cynthia needed some more seasoning, so she planned to bring her back and was considering an appropriate position for her at headquarters. Kate finally decided that she would put Cynthia in charge of the Personnel section. She was reasonably good with people and Kate hoped she would exercise what responsibility she had there competently.
Cynthia replied to 1LT Elizabeth that she would recommend 1LT Werner for the deputy position at Hergolia, explaining that she had been in charge of discipline. In that capacity, Cynthia wrote, Frederica Werner had done an excellent job and was a good candidate to be promoted to deputy.
Beth promptly mentioned to her boss, Kate, that Cynthia had recommended her head of discipline, a 1LT Werner, for the deputy position at Hergolia. Kate chuckled and said to herself that Cynthia had done the right thing this time. This made her feel better about bringing Cynthia back.
She explained to Beth that 1LT Jennifer had not got on with CPT Cynthia, her Commandant at Hergolia. She had brought Jennifer back and given her to COL Rachel as a deputy because she knew Rachel could both use her and control her. Then Kate outlined in total confidence to her new aide, Beth, her plans from that point.
“I’ve already announced her as deputy,” Kate said, “I will designate 1LT Werner, who is very accomplished, as Commandant. Cynthia will come back to headquarters and become head of the Personnel section.” So, I will still need a new deputy at Hergolia.” She paused before going forward.
“How will CPT Cynthia react to this move?” Beth asked.
“She’ll be happy to get back here,” Kate replied. “She’s a close friend of MAJ Nicole’s and both will like her being here. Werner is exceptionally good so there’s no problem with replacing Cynthia. But then I have to select a deputy.”
After a long pause, Kate looked directly at Beth and said coolly, “Beth, I’d like to send you to Hergolia as Frederica Werner’s deputy. You’ll learn a lot and make yourself more eligible to move up. You could even end up as commandant of the camp or another camp or center.”
Beth was shocked. She never thought Kate had intended to put her in a field position so soon. But then she decided that if Kate wanted to do this and figured Beth could handle it, she’d better accept and make the most of it.
“I’m not sure, Kate, I’ve learned enough here yet to take this position,” Beth replied in a humble tone. “But if you think I can do it, I’m game.”
“Good!” Kate responded with alacrity. “I’m not trying to get rid of you, Beth. Far from it. But I realized this is the kind of experience you need. This will be easy since I recently appointed Werner as the deputy, so she just moved up. She’ll like having you there since you bring some headquarters know-how and are new, so you’re no threat to her yet.”
Beth thanked Kate for her show of confidence in the young woman. Kate responded with a smile and told Beth she was going to be a star.
She told her to have Kim, Kate’s secretary, arrange to have 1LT Werner come up to headquarters and see Kate early the next day. She told her to have Kim also arrange for CPT Cynthia to come up to see Kate two days later.
Frederica arrived that same night and was billeted at the Bachelor Officers’ Quarters, where Beth was located. 1LT Werner arrived late enough that day that they did not run into each other and might not have recognized the other anyway.
The next morning Frederica put on her best uniform and reported to the Chief of Staff’s office.
After she was brought into Kate’s private office, Kate rose and shook her hand. “I’m delighted to see you, Captain,” she said to Frederica’s surprise. “Yes, you’re being promoted because I’ve heard a lot of good things about you, and I want you to become Commandant at Hergolia. Since you were already designated deputy, making this appointment will be even easier.”
“I’m totally amazed, General,” Frederica replied, still getting over her surprise. “I hope I can live up to your expectations.”
Kate smiled and answered, “I’m sure you can and that’s why I’m promoting you and assigning you there as Commandant. casibom You know how discipline must be maintained but you have a good head on your shoulders. Did you know MAJ Nicole when she was at Hergolia, by the way?”
Frederica grinned and said, “She was Commandant, so everyone knew her. Yes, I did. She’s a hell of an act to follow.”
“Indeed, she is,” Kate laughed, “and I’ve known her better than many have. I’d like you to see her and tell her in strict confidence that I plan to name you Commandant and see if she can give you some good advice and tips.”
“Thank you so much, General,” Frederica said gratefully. “I agree that I could learn quite a lot from her.”
“Don’t get the wrong idea, though,” Kate warned her. “She’s had ups and downs, and even scandals, but she’s very capable and I knew she could rise to the occasion when I put her in charge of my old unit here. Frederica, if that’s a position you might aim for, let me know because she won’t be there forever and I’ve heard how able you are in your current role.”
“Thank you, General,” Frederica replied. “I’m honored that you feel I’ve done a good job. I’ve tried very hard.”
“I know you have, and I hope this is a reward to you,” Kate said. “I think it is.”
“Absolutely,” Frederica answered.
“I want you to stay up here for a few days and I’ll have Beth here introduce you to people,” Kate said. “I want you to get to know the people you’ll have to deal with, and they will know that you’ve been named deputy at Hergolia. This way I can contact Cynthia as well as Nicole, so they’re not taken by surprise. Beth will let you know when you can see Nicole. I assume you know that she’s a close friend of Cynthia’s.”
“Most of us at Hergolia knew that they were exceedingly close friends, if you get my drift, General,” Frederica said, “but I really am grateful that you are willing to advise me in that regard.”
Kate told Frederica to sit with Beth who would start orienting her to headquarters. “She’ll take you around, too,” Kate said. “She’s young but she already knows a lot.”
“Thank you, General,” Frederica said as she realized it was time for her to stand, salute and about-face so as to then walk out of the office.
The next day, CPT Cynthia similarly arrived at Kate’s office. Kim escorted her into see Kate. Kate greeted her warmly.
“I know you’re wondering what I wanted you to come up here for,” Kate began. “I’ll get to the point. I’m making some changes, and I hope you’ll be pleased to be brought back to headquarters. I’m going to make you the deputy in the Personnel section here to COL Croydon. She’s an experienced administrator and after you’re there for a while, you’ll be capable of directing almost any part of this Service.”
Cynthia looked surprised and not sure of how to react. “This does come sort of suddenly,” she responded. “I’m surprised because I haven’t been back at Hergolia that long. I just hope my leaving Hergolia isn’t taken as negative.”
“If I thought you didn’t have the experience and capability, you wouldn’t be here now,” Kate confirmed.
“If I may be so bold, may I ask who will take my place out there?” Cynthia asked calmly.
“I’m just going to promote 1LT Werner, whom you recommended for deputy,” Kate responded.
“And her job–deputy?” Cynthia inquired.
“I haven’t decided that yet,” Kate answered. “I’m not going to announce this for a few days.”
Cynthia thanked Kate for her confidence in her and asked if there was anything else they needed to discuss.
Kate said she was glad that Cynthia was regarding this move positively.
Cynthia decided to take a chance and see if she could smoke Kate out. Nicole would have warned her that this was a bad idea because Kate was far shrewder than she ever let on.
“General, I’m sorry to harp on this,” Cynthia said, “but there’s no way people will not decide that my being brought back here so soon, even for a good post in Personnel, isn’t a demotion from being Commandant.”
“We can’t control what people think,” Kate replied, growing a little concerned now, “so I hope those who know you will think the best of you.”
“It’s really because of the Jennifer business with CPL Roberta, isn’t it?” Cynthia suggested.
“I won’t deny that that had some effect,” Kate responded carefully. “You had a chance to correct some of Jennifer’s behavior and yes, we wouldn’t be here now.”
“That’s so unfair,” Cynthia now complained openly.
“You were in command, and you should have known she might go too far,” Kate said evenly. “Now there’s a morale problem at the whole camp.”
“I know you won’t change your mind,” Cynthia now mused. “But I’d feel better if you disciplined me, even if I don’t get to keep my job out there.”
“Do you really feel that my disciplining you would clear the air?” Kate asked.
“Yes, General,” Cynthia replied. “I feel like I’ve been a bad girl and need for you to correct me like you would deal with Casibom slot oyunları a naughty girl.”

After leaving the headquarters building, she called her friend Nicole on Nicole’s cell phone. “I need to come see you, Nickie,” Cynthia said. “I’ve just met with Kate, and I want to see what you think.”
Nicole recognized that her friend Cynthia was hurting so she urged her to come right over to her office.
When Cynthia arrived, Grace sent her right in to Nicole who had told Grace that Cynthia was coming and to bring her directly in to see her. When Cynthia arrived, Nicole greeted her with a huge smile and nodded to Grace to shut the door on her way out.
“So, what’s the deal?” Nicole asked innocently.
“She’s bringing me back to headquarters,” Cynthia said plainly without emotion. “I’m going to be the deputy in the Personnel section.
“Hmmm,” Nicole reacted. “I don’t see that as a demotion. There’s some glory in being commandant, to be sure, but personnel is a critical part of this Service, and you’ll have a lot of people coming to see you. I think you’ll like this, Cyn, and I also have to be honest. She was peeved about Jennifer and thinks you shouldn’t have let her beat the shit out of that corporal.”
“I think you’re right, Nickie,” Cynthia replied, her spirit now assuaged and fired up.
“She had to yank Jennifer because you and everyone else there recognized how she had wrecked her credibility among the cadre at Hergolia,” Nicole went on. “Now she’s getting you out of here by way of a total clean-up. Did she let on who’s taking your place?”
“Yes, Nickie,” Cynthia answered. “She’s putting Freddie Werner in the Commandant’s spot there.”
“Good choice,” Nicole declared. “She’s solid. You and I both know that.”
“She is,” Cynthia said, “but I wish it hadn’t happened this way. It still makes it look like I got canned. By the way, I almost said caned, which I also was.”
“I said that I felt the need to be disciplined, so Kate had me on the horse and caned me and then threw in a little series of nasty strikes with her martinet,” Cynthia reported.
“She gave you a very good consolation prize, though,” Nicole advised. “She saw Freddie there and decided to put here in, because she instinctively knows she can do the job. What about deputy–who’s that going to be?”
“Don’t know,” Cynthia said, “she apparently hasn’t decided.”
“Do you have any ideas?” Nicole asked.
“If I did, I don’t believe my support would mean much,” Cynthia said abjectly.
“Now don’t go getting down on yourself, Cyn,” Nicole warned her. “You’re good and she knows it. She just wants to put paid on the whole Jennifer business, which is a shame, yes, because she was the last person you wanted there.”
“Come with me for lunch,” Nicole brightly asked. “Some people will either come by our table or even join us if I ask them.”
“OK,” Cynthia replied, “it may make me feel better, too. Thanks, Nickie.”
Nicole realized that she was able to raise her friend’s spirits. She was sure that Kate was royally pissed at Cynthia for the whole mess at Hergolia and felt compelled to step in and clean house. Frederica Werner was highly competent and had a good attitude, too, Nicole thought, so she was a great choice.
Nicole told Grace she was going to lunch with Cynthia at the officers’ mess. “I may not be back here after lunch,” she said quietly to her secretary.
When they reached the mess, Nicole got a choice table from the maitresse’d who liked her. Her deputy CPT Helene came by, and Nicole asked her to join them.
She said it was great to see Cynthia and asked her what brought her up from the camp.
“She’s being brought back here, Helene, just like you were,” Nicole told her, “but please keep that to yourself because it isn’t public yet. Cyn’s going to Personnel, which in the end will stand her in good stead.”
“Wow,” Helene responded. “I’m glad you got that, so it makes you feel better. The problem Cyn was that you had to be something other than Nicole’s deputy. You got the greatest training and experience, but you had to get out from always being seen as attached to her.”
“She’s right,” Nicole said. “You’ll get a lot out of being number two at Personnel. If you end up liking it, Croydon won’t be there for that long, she’s already eligible to retire.”
“That’s right,” Helene said brightly. “And remember I left Hergolia twice and it wasn’t always pleasant. Elaine sent me to the Disciplinary Unit, for crying out loud, and you two know what that’s like. Then Annette pulled me from being Commandant, having appointed me, so I was handed over to COL Rachel. I don’t want to be accused of sucking up, but I love working for you, Nicole.”
